K-12 School Safety Checklist (2026)
A Practical, Modern Framework for Assessing School Infrastructure, Life Safety Systems, and Emergency Preparedness
2026 K–12 School Safety & Communications Readiness Checklist
This checklist was created to help K–12 schools evaluate emergency communication, E911 compliance, and campus readiness using a practical, walk-through approach.
It is designed for IT Directors, Facilities Managers, School Safety Officers, and District Leadership who want to ensure their systems support fast, coordinated response when it matters most.
School safety depends on more than policies and plans — it depends on communication systems working exactly as intended under pressure.
This checklist is based on real campus walkthroughs and focuses on:
• Emergency communication and intercom coverage
• E911 compliance (Kari’s Law & Ray Baum’s Act)
• Staff awareness and response coordination
• Physical access and situational visibility
It is vendor-neutral, practical, and intended to be used as a self-audit tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do intercom systems and E911 work together in a school?
In a fully integrated system, intercoms and E911 work together to provide both internal communication and direct access to emergency services.
Most intercom systems are designed only for on-campus communication—allowing staff to contact the front office, administrators, or School Resource Officers (SROs). They do not typically connect directly to 911 or transmit location data to emergency responders.
Because Ambit Solutions is a telecom carrier, intercom stations can be integrated directly into the school’s phone system and E911 services. This allows schools to:
Call on-campus staff (administration or SRO) and
Call 911 directly from an intercom station, with precise location data
An optional configuration allows:
Short press → call front office or SRO
Long press → dial 911 directly
When 911 is dialed, the call routes through Ambit’s carrier network and can transmit NG911-compatible data, including:
School address
Building name
Floor
Room or zone
This integration ensures that internal response happens immediately while first responders are dispatched with accurate location information—eliminating delays and confusion during emergencies.
Do intercom calls to 911 meet Kari’s Law and Ray Baum’s Act requirements?
They can—if the system is properly designed and supported by a carrier-based E911 provider.
Federal law requires that:
Kari’s Law allows direct 911 dialing without prefixes and provides on-site notification
Ray Baum’s Act requires each 911 call to transmit a “dispatchable location” (building, floor, room)
Many standalone intercom systems do not meet these requirements on their own.
When intercoms are integrated with Ambit’s carrier services:
911 calls can be dialed directly
On-site staff can receive immediate alerts
Dispatchers receive detailed, dispatchable location data
This ensures that intercom-originated emergency calls align with federal E911 compliance requirements, rather than operating as isolated or non-compliant systems.
What is NG911, and why does it matter for school safety?
NG911 (Next Generation 911) is the modern evolution of emergency services that allows 911 centers to receive digital data, not just voice calls.
Unlike legacy 911 systems, NG911 can support:
More precise location information
Digital records tied to buildings and rooms
Integration with mapping and facility data
Faster routing to the correct emergency center
For schools, this matters because emergencies rarely happen at a single front desk or main office.
When intercoms, phones, and E911 services are NG911-ready:
First responders can identify exact locations faster
Administrators can correlate calls with floor plans or campus maps
Emergency response becomes more coordinated and informed
Ambit’s approach is built to support NG911 workflows today and adapt as states continue modernizing their 911 infrastructure.
Can schools add E911 and intercom integration without replacing their entire system?
No
To deliver reliable, compliant, and testable emergency communications, Ambit Solutions must operate as the full-stack provider. That means Ambit serves as the carrier, phone system, and IP intercom vendor under one unified platform.
This full-stack approach allows Ambit to:
Control how 911 calls are routed to emergency services
Ensure dispatchable location data is accurate and consistently transmitted
Integrate intercom stations directly with E911 and NG911 workflows
Perform end-to-end testing (including 933 and live PSAP coordination)
Eliminate gaps between vendors that can cause failures during emergencies
While some systems claim to “integrate” across multiple vendors, shared responsibility often leads to unclear ownership when something goes wrong—especially during a 911 event.
Ambit’s model prioritizes life safety over partial compatibility. By managing the entire communications stack, Ambit can stand behind the system’s performance, compliance, and ongoing accuracy.
For schools, this means fewer handoffs, clearer accountability, and a communication system designed to work reliably when seconds matter most.
