Asterisk™ is the most widely used open source voice soft switch in world.  There are millions of downloads annually all across the globe.  In fact, many of the most popular commercial platforms either utilize Asterisk™ in its entirety or utilize individual features like voicemail as a part of their offering.  The beauty of Asterisk™ is that it was developed completely around the open SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) standard.  Most commercial systems charge large sums of money to utilize SIP with their systems – it’s open and free!
