Kari’s Law Compliance for Schools and Campuses

Empowering Direct Emergency Access

What Is Kari’s Law?

Kari’s Law was signed into federal law in 2018 and took full effect on February 16, 2020. It’s named in memory of Kari Hunt, whose 9-year-old daughter attempted to call 911 during an attack but couldn’t get through because the hotel phone system required dialing “9” for an outside line.

The law mandates that all multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) installed, manufactured, or sold in the U.S. after February 16, 2020 must:

  • – Enable Direct 911 Access — Users can dial 911 directly, with no prefixes required.

  • – Provide On-Site Notification — Designated personnel must be alerted immediately when a 911 call is placed, including the callback number and caller’s location.

Why Kari’s Law Matters in K–12 Schools

School environments are complex—often spanning multiple buildings, classrooms, and networks. If a phone system isn’t compliant:

  • – Students and staff may be unable to reach emergency services without delay.

  • – Internal responders may not be notified when every second counts.

For K–12 IT Directors, Kari’s Law is not just about telecom configuration—it’s about life safety.

How Ambit Solutions Ensures Compliance

We build Kari’s Law compliance into every implementation from day one:

Direct 911 Configuration

We ensure that all outbound call routes are programmed for direct 911 access—no need for “9” or other prefixes.

Automated Internal Notifications

Our systems send real-time alerts—such as paging groups or on-screen messages—to front offices, SROs, or designated staff when a 911 call is made. You’ll know the moment a crisis starts, and exactly where it’s happening.
