Campus Communication Systems for Colleges and Universities

Phones, intercoms and 911 that work across every building.

Ambit designs and supports phone, intercom and 911 systems for community colleges, technical colleges and universities across the Southeast. One vendor and one support team cover the offices, residence halls, classroom buildings and athletic venues that make up your campus.

24/7 U.S.-based support. FCC-licensed carrier. ISO 9001 certified.

WHY CAMPUSES ARE DIFFERENT

A campus phone system has to cover more buildings than anyone can see at once

Campuses tend to grow one building at a time. The result is a mix of analog phones, aging PBX equipment, separate intercom systems and several carrier contracts, with no single owner when a problem crosses systems.

WHAT WE INSTALL

Phones, intercoms, 911 and the connections between them

Department call flows, extensions that follow people across buildings, auto-attendants for admissions and administrative offices, after-hours routing and voicemail to email, all on one platform.

Campus-wide and zone paging, building intercoms and emergency call stations, built for the scale of a campus.

Dispatchable location on 911 calls, including floor and room.

Direct 911 dialing and on-site notification on your multi-line phone systems.

Replace aging PRI circuits and scattered carrier contracts with one service from an FCC-licensed carrier.

Keeps outbound calling and 911 available when the internet goes down.

Voice, video, messaging and softphones for faculty and staff on campus, at home or between buildings.

Fixes dead zones in masonry buildings, shielded labs and large venues.

Room-level notification when someone dials 911, and maps that tie to your systems.

911 ON CAMPUS

What a campus 911 call has to carry

On a campus, a street address is not enough. Responders need the building, the floor and the room, and someone on site needs to know the call was made.

RequirementWhat it means on campus
Direct dialingKari’s Law requires multi-line phone systems to let people dial 911 directly, with no prefix.
On-site notificationThe same law requires notice to a central location on site when a call is made.
Dispatchable locationRay Baum’s Act requires location detail to travel with 911 calls from fixed phones, down to floor and room.

Residence halls, research buildings, athletic facilities and portable classrooms each add their own wrinkles. We map every location, configure every phone and test every call path. See our Kari’s Law guide and NG911 guide.

EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION

Where your phones, intercoms and paging fit your Clery Act plan

Institutions that take part in federal student aid programs must immediately notify the campus community when they confirm a significant emergency, and must test their emergency response procedures at least once each calendar year (34 CFR 668.46). Your plan decides which channels you use. Phones, intercoms and paging add voice channels that reach inside buildings, and we can help you include them in your annual test.

ONE VENDOR

One vendor across your entire campus

University technology environments collect vendors the way campuses collect buildings: one company for phones, another for intercoms, a third for SIP trunking, and nobody who owns the problem when something breaks across systems.

Ambit provides phones, intercoms, paging, SIP trunking, 911 compliance, cellular failover and cell boosting under one platform and one support relationship. When something needs attention, there is one call to make.

CAMPUS PROOF

From one building to the whole campus

The University of Montevallo first partnered with Ambit in 2013 for VoIP in one newly renovated academic building. That grew into a migration of the entire campus off a mix of analog Nortel systems. Its IS&T team reports a significantly lower monthly phone bill and now manages everything through its own PBX.

“Out of all the vendors that we use in IS&T, Ambit Solutions is by far the most knowledgeable and dependable group that I have worked with.”

FAQ

Campus communication systems frequently asked questions

Does Kari’s Law apply to colleges and universities?

Kari’s Law applies to multi-line telephone systems, and a campus phone system is one. It requires direct 911 dialing with no prefix and notification to a central location on site. Our Kari’s Law guide covers who is covered and how to check your campus.

A dispatchable location is the information that tells a 911 center where to send help: a validated street address plus details such as building, floor and room. Ray Baum’s Act requires it for 911 calls from fixed phones. See our NG911 guide.

Institutions that take part in federal student aid programs must immediately notify the campus community when they confirm a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat, and must test their emergency response procedures at least once each calendar year (34 CFR 668.46).

Yes. SIP trunking replaces PRI and legacy carrier lines and works with your existing phone system. See our SIP trunking page.

Cellular failover keeps outbound calling and 911 available when the internet goes down, and on-premise intercoms keep running. See our cellular failover page.

Yes. Each building type has its own needs, such as 911 location in residence halls, cell coverage in shielded labs and paging in large venues, and we design for each.

Yes. In-building cell boosting fixes dead zones in masonry buildings, shielded labs and large venues, and a site survey comes first. See our cell booster page.
