Every phone system Ambit installs on or after January 6, 2022 meets NG911 compliance and Ray Baum’s Act from day one. Dispatchable location data goes out with every 911 call, as the FCC requires for any Multi-Line Telephone System (MLTS) installed on or after that date. That’s standard on every current deployment, not an upgrade.
But a campus that was compliant on install day doesn’t stay that way by itself. Rooms get renumbered. Wings get added. Phones move to a new closet nobody logged. None of that shows up until a 911 call goes out with the wrong location attached, and by then it’s too late to fix it.
That’s the gap the NG911 Compliance and Audit Program closes. It’s how your district keeps dispatchable location accurate, verified, and certified as your campus changes: semester after semester, not just the day the system went in.
What Is a Dispatchable Location?
When someone dials 911 from a typical phone, dispatchers only see the building’s street address, the same address on file for the whole campus. That’s called address line 1.
A dispatchable location adds address line 2: the specific room number, wing, or floor where the call is actually coming from. Instead of “123 Main Street,” a 911 dispatcher sees “123 Main Street, Room 214, Second Floor, East Wing.” That’s the difference between first responders searching an entire building and first responders walking straight to the right door.
NG911 compliance and Ray Baum’s Act require that level of detail on every handset. It’s the core of what this page is about.

Dispatchable location works a little differently, because it’s tied to a specific FCC deadline. NG911 compliance and Ray Baum’s Act require dispatchable location on every handset for any Multi-Line Telephone System installed on or after January 6, 2022. If your system went in on or after that date, you’re already required to have it, and you’re already paying for it. It’s delivered through Dispatchable Location Maintenance, billed at $1.00 per handset, per month, and built into your standard service from day one. There’s nothing extra to turn on.
If your system was installed before January 6, 2022, it’s grandfathered: dispatchable location isn’t a legal requirement for it, and it isn’t currently included. Ask your account team about adding it.
Either way, your district stays responsible for the location data itself: your team tracks room and phone changes, runs its own checks, and submits updates to Ambit when something moves.
The Gap: Compliance Doesn't Hold Still
NG911 compliance and Ray Baum’s Act don’t require ongoing re-verification, but real campuses don’t stay static, and nothing forces anyone to catch it when a room’s location data goes stale. Common ways compliance quietly breaks, even with location maintenance in place:
- A phone gets moved to a new classroom and the location record doesn’t follow it
- New construction or portable classrooms go live before anyone updates dispatchable location
- Staff turnover means the person who knew the system’s history is gone
- No one has ever placed a live 933 test call to confirm a 911 call actually reaches your local PSAP
None of these trigger an alert. They just sit there until an emergency exposes them. That’s the gap the NG911 Compliance and Audit Program is built to close.
This is the optional, hands-off upgrade on top of your standard service. Instead of your team catching drift on its own, Ambit runs the checks, on your schedule:
- Verification at the start of each semester: on-site review of every campus to confirm each phone still has accurate, dispatchable location that meets NG911 compliance and Ray Baum’s Act
- 933 test calls at every handset: confirming every device transmits correct location data and can actually be reached in an emergency
- At least one live 911 test call, coordinated with your PSAP: broadcast to administrator phones so your team sees exactly how a real emergency would unfold
- A compliance certificate upon completion: documentation your district meets federal life-safety and NG911 readiness requirements
- A website safety badge: a digital “NG911 Certified by Ambit Solutions” badge for your district to display

Systems installed before January 6, 2022 are grandfathered. Dispatchable location and its maintenance aren't a legal requirement for those systems and aren't currently included. Talk to your account team about adding it.
